One of the things I love most about DJing is experimenting with music and discovering combinations that unexpectedly work together. Mashups are a great way to create something fresh from two very different tracks, and that’s exactly what inspired my mash-up “Fill Me In and Getaway (DJ Errn Mash-Up)”, blending music from The Music and Craig David.

At first glance these artists come from completely different worlds. One is known for energetic alternative rock and indie dance sounds, while the other became a global star with smooth UK garage and R&B hits. But sometimes the most interesting mashups happen when genres collide.

The Tracks Behind the Mashup

The mashup combines two well-known tracks:

  • Getaway by The Music

  • Fill Me In by Craig David

“Fill Me In,” released in 1999, helped define the UK garage sound and launched Craig David’s career. Its laid-back groove, catchy vocal hooks and nostalgic early-2000s vibe make it instantly recognisable.

“Getaway,” on the other hand, has a much more driving energy. The Music were known for their fusion of indie rock and electronic elements, creating tracks that feel powerful and rhythmically hypnotic.

Bringing these two songs together creates a fascinating contrast between smooth garage vocals and a punchy indie instrumental.

Why This Mashup Works

When creating mashups, the key is finding elements that complement each other. Even though the original songs come from different genres, they share some musical qualities that make the blend work surprisingly well.

The rhythmic groove of “Getaway” provides a strong, energetic foundation that allows the vocals from “Fill Me In” to sit naturally in the mix. The contrast between the rock instrumentation and the soulful vocal lines creates a new version of both songs that feels fresh but still familiar.

It’s the kind of combination that can make people stop for a moment and think, “Hang on… I know this!”

The Creative Process

Creating mashups is always a bit of a puzzle. It involves carefully matching tempo, key, and structure so that both tracks work together without sounding forced.

For this mashup I focused on:

  • Tempo matching to keep the groove consistent

  • Aligning vocal phrasing with the instrumental sections

  • Balancing energy so the rock backing track supports the vocal rather than overpowering it

The goal is always to make the mashup sound like a track that could almost have existed naturally.

Mashups and DJ Creativity

Mashups have always been a big part of DJ culture. They allow DJs to reinterpret familiar songs and surprise audiences with unexpected combinations.

For me, creating mashups like “Fill Me In and Getaway” is a way to explore different musical worlds and blend them into something unique. It’s also a great reminder that good music doesn’t have to stay within genre boundaries.

When you mix indie rock energy with UK garage vocals, you can end up with something completely new.

Final Thoughts

My “Fill Me In and Getaway (DJ Errn Mash-Up)” is a fun example of how two very different songs can come together to create something exciting.

By blending the distinctive sound of The Music with the iconic vocals of Craig David, the mashup brings together indie rock and UK garage in a way that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

It’s always rewarding to experiment with music and discover combinations that work in unexpected ways—and that’s exactly what this mashup is all about.
